Sooners shut down the Cowboys, 27-0

Posted in Bedlam Football, OSU, OU on November 29th, 2009 by BSN

Perhaps OSU Head Coach Mike Gundy played it safe because he knew his injured QB Zac Robinson was not completely healthy.  Or, perhaps the Sooner defense responded to the embarrassing performance in Lubbock from a week ago.  In reality it was a combination of the two, as Oklahoma rolled to a 27-0 win over Oklahoma State in Bedlam 2009.  The Cowboys were in this one well into the 3rd quarter (only down 13-0 with 3 minutes to go), but could not find any sort of traction on offense.

Mr. Mookie predicts Bedlam 2009

Posted in Bedlam Football, OSU, OU on November 27th, 2009 by Mr. Mookie

The biggest story line here is Cowboy QB Zac Robinson.  If he starts – and all signs point to that he will – how will his shoulder hold up?  He’s had 2 weeks to recover from a concussion…. Usually that is plenty of time to be mentally ready for football.  A sore throwing shoulder can’t be ignored.  But even if he doesn’t have it, Brandon Weeden showed in one half of football that he can handle the duties of quarterback for OSU.

CFN.com OU-OSU Bedlam Prediction

Posted in Bedlam Football, OSU, OU on November 27th, 2009 by BSN

From College Football News.com:  Oklahoma State (9-2) at Oklahoma (6-5), 11:30 CST, Saturday, November 28:  Why to watch: If you hooked up the Big 12 bigwigs to a lie detector and asked them what they’d love to see happen over the next two weeks, they’d like to see Texas win its last two games and go play for the national title, Boise State struggle against Nevada, if not lose, and for Oklahoma State to drill Oklahoma in the Bedlam Series with an impressive, dominating performance. If Oklahoma wins, then the Big 12 will only get one team into the BCS, Texas, unless Nebraska wins the title game. However, that would likely mean the national title shot is gone for the Longhorns.

Sooners fall again in Alaska Shootout to Houston #ou

Posted in OU on November 27th, 2009 by BSN

Things are not going as planned for the Oklahoma Sooners’ men’s basketball team and Head Coach Jeff Capel in the Great Alaska Shootout.  The Houston Cougars put up a terrific performance on way to a 100-93 win over OU on Thursday night. The Cougars move to 1-0 in the Shootout (2-1 overall on year) and set up an intriguing match-up with San Diego tommorow night to decide the winner of Pool B. The Sooners, shocked for the second time in as many days in Anchorage, fall to 0-2 (2-3 overall) and will play in the 5th/6th place game Saturday.

Posted in OSU on November 26th, 2009 by BSN

Oklahoma State won its second NCAA men’s cross country championship Monday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course by running as a team. Ryan Vail was the first Cowboy to cross the finish line, placing seventh. Teammates Colby Lowe (eighth), John Kosgei (11th) and Girma Mecheso (24th) earned All-America honors as well to lead the way for OSU, who finished 16 points ahead of second-place Oregon.

Sooner Hoops fall in Round 1 of Alaska Shootout

Posted in OU on November 26th, 2009 by BSN

A cranky hamstring nor No. 25 Oklahoma could slow down Brandon Johnson and San Diego. Johnson scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half, then his Toreros teammates took over to beat the Sooners 76-64 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout.  It was the second loss in five days for the Sooners (2-2), who lost to Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday night. Willie Warren led Oklahoma with 30 points, mostly after the outcome was decided. “We’re not a very good team right now,” Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel said. “We had a stretch there in the first half, where we started to play with some energy and some passion.” The Toreros (3-1), from the West Coast Conference, outrebounded Oklahoma 42-31. Chris Lewis had 10 and De’Jon Jackson had seven. “I had no idea we could outrebound them the way we did,” San Diego coach Bill Grier said.

Win Bedlam, and Cowboys will have a Fiesta

Posted in Bedlam Football, OSU, OU on November 24th, 2009 by BSN

Multiple sources are confirming that the Fiesta Bowl will select the Pokes if they can knock off the 6-5 Sooners this Saturday in Norman.   Of course this also assumes that Texas takes care of business against A&M on Thursday night, meaning the Horns get the BCS Championship game against the SEC champion.  The Fiesta Bowl committee does seem inclined to take the Cowboys over an undefeated Boise State team for an at-large bid.  If Texas loses to the Aggies, then look for the Pokes to visit the Cotton Bowl no matter what happens in Bedlam.

Blowout in Lubbock: Texas Tech 41, OU 13

Posted in Big 12, OU on November 22nd, 2009 by BSN

If you watched the game, you know how bad it was.  If you didn’t watch the game, then just know this:  OU did not show up to play yesterday and got absolutely drilled by a 6-4 Texas Tech team that lost by 23 to A&M on it’s on home turf.  What’s puzzling about this is how the defense played, or, did not play.  Coach Stoops and defensive coordinator Brent Venables have *owned* the Red Raiders’ offense over the years and rarely give up a performance like this as Tech QB Taylor Potts (benched earlier in the year!) threw for 338 yards.   Then, the Tech running game, which came in ranked 117th in the nation produced 161 yards and three touchdowns.  This was the largest margin of victory ever for a Tech team over Oklahoma.

OU Texas Tech Predict from Mr. Mookie

Posted in Big 12, OU on November 21st, 2009 by Mr. Mookie

Well, the Pokes held up their end of the bargain.  Let’s see if the Sooners can too…. and make this year’s Bedlam clash a meaningful one.

I’ve been thinking most of this season that OU’s late season loss would be this weekend in Lubbock.  The Sooners have stunk on the road and no way they could keep up with the Tech offensive juggernaut.

Cowboys slug through 31-28 win over Colorado in new look

Posted in Big 12, OSU on November 20th, 2009 by BSN

It certainly was not the most eye-pleasing game to watch, but third-string QB Brandon Weeden and RB Keith Toston pushed OSU to victory over the Colorado Buffs in Stillwater last night.  Alex Cate started the game under center, but after an 0-9 and 1 INT performance, head coach Mike Gundy switched to the 26 year old Weeden.  Weeden seemed much more comfortable behind center than Cate as he threw 10-15 for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns.   And despite that fact that the Cowboys had trouble making anything on 4th and 1 (0 for 3) and issues with holding onto the ball (Perrish Cox, Kendall Hunter both lost fumbles).

Oklahoma State v. Colorado Preview: Thursday night special

Posted in Big 12, OSU on November 19th, 2009 by BSN

It’s Senior Day (night?) in Stillwater tonight as the Pokes host the 3-7 Colorado Buffaloes.  The big question is: Will OSU QB Zac Robinson play after sustaining a monster hit and concussion last week against Texas Tech – only 6 days ago? But does it really matter if he plays? The bottom line is that OSU can win this game without Mr. Robinson, relying on a depth at running back and an underrated defense that has played much better in ‘09 than in ‘08.  We’re guessing that head coach Mike Gundy will send backup Alex Cate onto the field tonight for some much-needed reps and game time experience.  Robinson has started 34 games in a row, but his Cowboy career ends this year.  Better late than never to start seeing the future of OSU at quarterback, especially against a bad opponent. Assuming OSU wins tonight, that puts them at 9-2 and clearly on the fast track for the Cotton Bowl, and maybe an outside chance at the Fiesta. Besides, Bedlam looms only 9 days later, and the Pokes must have a healthy Robinson back for that one if they want to beat the Sooners in Norman.

Bob Stoops interested in Notre Dame?

Posted in OU on November 16th, 2009 by BSN

Considering Stoops still has a job with OU, and Notre Dame still has a head coach in Charlie Weis, this may be way premature.  But the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Bob Stoops would be targeted to replace Weis, assuming he does not return to the Irish in 2010.  And there is speculation that, yes, Bobby would talk to the Irish.

CFN Preview: Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech

Posted in Big 12, OSU on November 14th, 2009 by BSN

Game of the week in the Big 12:  Texas Tech @ Oklahoma State  7:00 CST, Saturday, November 14, ABC Why to watch: Can Oklahoma State be impressive enough to get into the BCS? Still in the hunt for the Big 12 South, needing to beat Texas Tech this week and Colorado and Oklahoma to close, while hoping for a total meltdown from Texas, the Cowboys have to keep pressing and hope for the best. More realistically, it’s all about style points now as a 10-2 OSU team could potentially get an at-large BCS bid if it looks great in high profile games against the Sooners and the Red Raiders. For Texas Tech, it’s all about closing strong after getting two weeks off to rest up for an interesting finishing kick with Oklahoma coming up next week before closing out at Baylor. For a team in such turmoil and with all the rebuilding needing to be done, finishing strong and getting at least eight wins this regular season would be a nice bridge to next year.

Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach: A self-proclaimed piratetologist

Posted in Big 12, OSU on November 13th, 2009 by BSN

Quick read of the ups and downs for the 2009 Texas Tech Red Raider football team, peppered with multiple references to Mike Leach’s obsession with “pirates”:  A self-proclaimed piratetologist, Leach has revisited his sword analogy this season, reminding his Red Raiders: “None of that droopy stuff,” he said. Droopy, though, is how this season in Lubbock compares to last. Texas Tech was undefeated through 10 games this time last year, ranked No. 2 in the country and basking in back-to-back wins over top-10 opponents. On Saturday the unranked Red Raiders take three losses into No. 17 Oklahoma State.

Will Oklahoma make a bowl game?

Posted in Big 12, OU on November 13th, 2009 by Mr. Mookie

We are far past the conversation of what if? for the Sooners in 2009.  What’s done is done.  OU has almost drowned in a series of bad injuries and their backups haven’t been capable of keeping this team in the national hunt.  So here were are 9 games in and Oklahoma is 5-4.
