Ole Miss Defensive Coordinator turns down Gators

Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix will stay with the Rebels despite being courted by Florida over the past week.  “I’m happy to be a Rebel,” he said.  Nix, who is currently in the first year of a three-year contract that pays $350,000 annually, will receive a raise according to coach Houston Nutt.  The amount of the raise hasn’t been finalized.  Nutt said he wasn’t surprised Florida targeted Nix. The position came open after Charlie Strong left the Gators for the head coaching job at Louisville.  “It’s a credit to him and how good of a coach he is,” Nutt said. “But he loves the people he’s working with here and that’s key. I’ll be glad when all these jobs (around the country) are filled because they keep coming after him.

Florida won the national championship in 2008 and is in another BCS bowl this year. Two Gator coordinators (Dan Mullen and Strong) have moved on to head coaching jobs over the past two seasons.  Nix said he wants to be a head coach some day, but could accomplish that goal by continuing to do good things at Ole Miss.  “If that opportunity presents itself one day then that would be great,” Nix said. “But if not, then I want to be the best defensive coordinator and best defensive coach I can be.”
